Act II
Sally hears Dirk laughing and comes downstairs to see what the noise was
all about. She is still angry with Dirk for his rude behavior during his last
visit, but he apologizes and Sally decides to accept his apology. When she serves
him a drink, Dirk starts to make advances towards her as part of his plan of obtaining
her share of the saloon. Sadie arrives unnoticed by either of them...
Script Excerpt
Sally. "Here you are."
Dirk. "And here you are. Has anyone ever told you what beautiful eyes you have?"
Sally. "Noooo."
Dirk. "And has anyone ever told you what beautiful hair you have?"
Sally. "Noooo."
Dirk. "And has anybody ever told you what beautiful...."
Sadie. "Well, howdy Mr. Devious. Hope I'm interrupting something! Just what
in billy blue blazes are you doing here, and if so, why?"
Dirk. (Aside) "Curses! Just when my smooth manners
and rugged good looks were getting her interested!" (To Sadie.)
"Why, Sadie! I was just coming to apologize for my rude behavior and
Sally was serving me a drink. Care to join me?"
Sadie. "I'd rather drink with a sunburnt rattlesnake! Be better company,
too. This is a public drinking place, I reckon, so even skunks like you can stay
as long as you behave yourself. Now, exactly what were you saying to Sally?"
Sally. "Dirk, I mean, Mr. Devious, was telling me about my beautiful eyes
and hair and...what else was beautiful Mr. Devious?"
Dirk. "Never mind. I'll tell you later."
Sadie. "I get it now! First you sweet talk her. Then she falls in love
with you. And then she helps you convince me to sell the saloon, right Mr. Devious?"
Sally becomes upset and goes to her room to be alone. Dirk raises his offer to buy the
saloon from Sadie. She refuses again, telling Dirk that he is wasting his time and she
will never change her mind. Dirk Becomes very angry and threatens Sadie by telling
her that an accident could happen to the place, like a fire...or an explosion.
Sadie tells him that she isn't frightened and Dirk grabs her. She screams
for help when Clint bursts into the saloon....
Script Excerpt
Clint. "What's going on here?"
Dirk. "Nothing. Nothing that would concern you! We were just discussing
the sale of the Saloon."
Clint. "It looks to me like you were bothering Sadie again. Seems to me
I told you once before that I don't hold with molesting women folk."
Dirk. "I wasn't molesting her."
Clint. "Sure looked to me like you were. Go for your gun."
Dirk. "I can't. My hand isn't healed yet. See?" (He holds up his hand and shakes it.)
"Ow! Ow!"
Clint. "Okay. Tell you what. You just go ahead and pull your gun out with
your other hand and I'll let you have the first shot before I draw and plug you."
Dirk. "Not a chance. I can't shoot straight with that hand."
Clint. "Okay. I'll let you have the first three shots and I'll stand real close."
Dirk. "Okay...Wait. That's still not fair."
Clint. "Why not?"
Dirk. "Because you wouldn't be offering the deal if you thought you
couldn't win. No, I'll just be moving along. Good bye."
Since Dirk is too cowardly to engage in a gun fight, Clint punches him in the jaw
instead and a fist fight begins with Clint winning. Dirk starts to leave,
swearing revenge. Clint chases him out of the saloon. Clint takes a very shaken
Sadie into his arms and things begin to get romantic when Sally comes downstairs
to find out what all the commotion was about. Sally tries to get rid of
Sally by telling her to continue to clean the saloon, but Sally tells her
she is tired of cleaning and wants to take more responsibility for running
the place. Sadie says she needs more schooling. Sally can't read or write
or count money and Sadie wants to send her to school back east.
Script Excerpt
Sally. "I've cleaned the rooms upstairs each day for the last week."
Sadie. "Then wash some glasses."
Sally. "I've washed all of the glasses for the third time today."
Sadie. "Then why don't you go to your room and study some of those school
books I got you. Just because there ain't no school in Adobe Wells doesn't mean
you can't learn some arithmetic."
Sally. (Frowns at the word arithmetic.) "I hate arithmetic. I wish I could
go to a real school, Sadie."
Sadie. "We've been down that trail before. The nearest school is over to
Mud Flats, and it would take too much time for you to travel back and forth."
Sally. "Well, I wish that I could learn to count better. Then I could
help you make change when it's busy."
Sadie. "You just keep on studying those school books. It'll come to you."
After some more discussion about schooling, Clint decides it's time to leave.
The girls continue to argue, but eventually make their peace with each other.
All's well once more...or is it?
